Formerly known as West Polmear with a population of 9 and a small fishing fleet that used the beach as a harbour, the Charlestown Quay project saw the construction of the pier and by the 19th Century various businesses had popped up, from shipbuilding to lime burning, and the population grew to almost 3,000. To this day the port remains unspoiled and retains much of its Georgian character making it a firm favourite with production companies for film and television locations for programmes such as Poldark and Mansfield Park.
